...meets at 7 PM on the Fourth Tuesday of each month, January through November [NO meeting in December!], at the Northbrook Chamber of Commerce Building, 2002 Walters Avenue, Northbrook, Illinois (Click Here for Directions). NEXT MEETING DATE: TUESDAY, AUGUST 26 -- 7 PM Making Distributions During Your Retirement Years You've been saving for years (or decades) and prudently investing for the "long term". Now the "long term" is here. You've left your career and job and put yourself at the mercy of market forces, the Social Security administration, your company pension manager or 401(K) Plan. As a "Plan C" alternative you've practiced saying a friendly "Welcome to Wal-Mart" to the bathroom mirror. How should you pay yourself in retirement? What amounts can you withdraw without worry that you'll run out of assets while your heart's still twitching? Should you take distributions from personal or tax-deferred accounts when you have the choice? What portfolio allocation should you maintain during the withdrawal years? When is a "conservative" retirement allocation actually riskier than a "risky" allocation? To begin answering these questions, read: Will Your Savings Last? What the Withdrawal Rate Studies Show" by William Reichenstein [AAII Journal, July 2008] [If you can't locate this recent issue, click here for a PDF copy of the article.] Two other articles from the AAII Journal are also worth your attention and can be viewed as PDFs by clicking on their titles below: Withdrawal Strategies to Maker Your Nest Egg Last Longer - William Reichenstein [AAII Journal, November 2006] Optimizing Your Retirement Income: What Works Best and Why - Christine Fahlund [AAII Journal, August 2008]
YOUR assignment for AUGUST... Read the article(s) above before the meeting so you can contribute to and get the most benefit from the group discussion. If you are now in retirement, consider: Are you already using some of these ideas? Which ideas have worked well for you? Which ideas or methods haven't worked? Can you suggest alternative retirement income strategies to the group? If you are in your pre-retirement years, consider: What do the withdrawal concepts and strategies say about how much you are saving? Are you saving in the right type of account (tax-deferred, tax-exempt, non-deferred)? What changes to your current asset allocation have the articles encouraged you to consider?
In recent months North Shore meeting attendance has been falling... ...because too many people are wallowing in self-pity instead of planning for the next bull market. Seating in the AAII-North Shore Subgroup investor center is much more luxurious than chairs you'd find in a typical Ukrainian bus station. The Sturgeon General of California has determined that second-hand stock tips may be hazardous to your wealth... when will the nanny state of California let freedom ring? Satisfaction with these meetings is not guaranteed ... if you want guarantees, our Death and Taxes sub-subgroup has them! Discussion at North Shore meetings may include disinformation, misinformation or ugly factoids... persons under 18 will not be admitted without a stockholder. Average investment rewards achieved after attending a North Shore AAII meeting vary with the listener's ability to turn lemons into lemonade.
